Angry Box

In collaboration with Champika Fernando, Amy Zhao Yu, and Abdulrahman Y. idlbi.

For the design and fabrication module of the Hands-on Foundations in Media Technology class we designed an angry box which would start biting you if you came to close. The idea was to give the impression of an inanimate object which carries something precious inside which anyone would like to grab. But then if someone is approaching this box turns into life closes its lid and the eyes shine.

We used the shopbot to go halfway through the wood so that LEDs would be visible when turned on but not if turned off. Figuring out the self closing mechanism was the toughest. We experimented with lego first and ended up including lego parts into our final box. A proximity sensor detects if someone is approaching and activates the motor inside the box so that the lid closes.
